As a member of the European Monetary System, the accepted currency in Portugal is the Euro (€). Foreign currency can be exchanged at banks (Monday to Friday, 8.30am to 3pm). Bureaux de change operate everyday between 9am and 1pm and from 2pm to 7pm.

Lisbon is on Central European Time, GMT (+ 1 hour during summer time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October).

Electric Current

European type 2 pin sockets with 220 volts AC at 50 cycles are used. Visitors from the UK will need an adapter for electric appliances, and US citizens need a converter/transformer as well in order to use their 110/125V appliances.


Portugal has Portuguese as its official language. Street names and most road and transport signs are in Portuguese.
Many restaurants, especially those in the city center, have menus in several languages. But if there’s something you don’t understand, don’t be afraid to ask, people will be happy to help you. Many people from Lisbon understand at least English.

Located in the heart of the city in old quarter of Baixa, the center has an “ASK ME” tourist information desk; a gourmet restaurants named “Terreiro do Paço”; a café called “Espaço Contínuo” and an art gallery. Artesanato do Tejo handicraft shop offers paintings, ceramics, fire arts, woven pieces, lace, CDs and books on Lisbon, Portuguese gastronomy and tourist guides.

Lisbon enjoys a Mediterranean climate. It has the warmest winters of any metropolis in Europe, with average temperatures 15°C (59°F) during the day and 8°C (46°F) at night from December to February. The typical summer season lasts about six months, from May to October, although also in April temperatures sometimes reach around 25°C (77.0°F).
